Where it came from
The Double-Faced Substitute Card was introduced by Wizards of the Coast for the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt expansion as a utility component. In sets featuring double-faced cards, which require players to use opaque sleeves to conceal the card's back, these substitute cards serve as a visual placeholder. By marking the card name on the substitute, players can track their deck contents without needing to remove the primary card from a sleeve during play.
The design of these cards adheres to the aesthetic of the Innistrad block, utilizing a moody, gothic-inspired graphic layout that signals its role as an official game aid. While the card is not a playable game piece in the traditional sense, it was a necessary addition to the set's design to maintain the integrity of competitive play. These cards were distributed via set and draft boosters, designed specifically to facilitate the transition between human and transformed states for the set's titular werewolf creatures.
