Double-Faced Substitute Card

The double-faced substitute card was introduced by Wizards of the Coast to facilitate play with double-faced cards in Magic: The Gathering. These cards address a practical logistical challenge: when players use opaque sleeves for their main deck, double-faced cards—which have game information on both sides—cannot be played directly without revealing the hidden side or removing the card from its sleeve. These substitute cards act as placeholders, allowing players to keep the physical double-faced card outside the game zone until it enters play, at which point it is swapped for the placeholder.

The design for the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt series was crafted by renowned fantasy artist Donato Giancola. Known for his mastery of light and classical composition, Giancola was commissioned to provide a consistent, atmospheric aesthetic that fits the gothic horror themes of the Innistrad plane. Rather than depicting a specific character, these substitute cards utilize a stylized, iconic back design intended to blend seamlessly with the aesthetic of the expansion, ensuring that the placeholder cards remain distinct yet thematic during competitive and casual play.
