Double-Faced Substitute Card

The Double-Faced Substitute Card, specifically collector number 4 from the Strixhaven: School of Mages set, was introduced by Wizards of the Coast to address the logistical challenges of using double-faced cards in card games. Because these cards feature gameplay information on both sides, they cannot be played in opaque-backed sleeves without being identifiable while in a deck. This substitute card serves as a checklist placeholder, allowing players to represent their double-faced cards while keeping them protected or stored separately until they are played.

The design of these substitute cards mirrors the aesthetic of the Strixhaven set, emphasizing the scholarly, magical atmosphere of the university. The artwork and layout were produced by the internal design team at Wizards of the Coast, intended to be both functional and thematically consistent with the expansion. These placeholders have been well-received by the community for their utility in tournament play, effectively bridging the gap between card mechanics and practical physical card management.
