Where it came from
The Double-Faced Substitute Card, numbered 3, originated from the 2022 Magic: The Gathering expansion Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. These cards were introduced as a functional utility tool for players who use double-faced cards—cards with game information on both sides—in their decks. Because these cards do not have standard backs, they require opaque sleeves or these substitute placeholders to maintain the hidden nature of the deck during shuffling and gameplay.
The design of this specific card aligns with the cyberpunk aesthetic of the Neon Dynasty set, which blends traditional Japanese motifs with futuristic technology. The visual direction focuses on a minimalist, utilitarian layout to distinguish it from the game's standard trading card art. These placeholders were included in the random card slots of set booster packs and draft booster packs, serving as a practical necessity to facilitate the set's complex dual-sided card mechanics.
