Because Strixhaven featured a high volume of double-faced cards—which are printed with different information on the front and back—players required a way to represent these cards in their decks without physically marking their sleeves or using non-transparent card backs. These cards were distributed within booster packs as a common-rarity placeholder to be used as a stand-in for specific cards from the set.

The visual design for this specific substitute card was executed by artist Piotr Dura. Dura, a digital illustrator known for his atmospheric and detailed work within the fantasy genre, opted for a clean, professional aesthetic that maintains the visual language of the Strixhaven set. The design focuses on the necessary functional fields, such as the card name and mana cost, while incorporating subtle thematic elements of the Strixhaven University aesthetic.
