Double-Faced Substitute Card

The Double-Faced Substitute Card, numbered 9 in the Strixhaven: School of Mages set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2021. These cards were designed to address a functional challenge within the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem, specifically serving as a checklist or placeholder for double-faced cards that might be difficult to shuffle or identify when placed in opaque card sleeves. By marking one of these cards, players could represent a complex permanent in their deck without needing to remove the actual card from a protective sleeve to flip it during gameplay.

The design of the substitute card is strictly utilitarian, prioritizing clarity and ease of use to maintain the pace of a match. Unlike the highly illustrative art cards found in the same set, this card features a standardized, minimalist layout intended to blend into the deck while providing clear lines for the player to record the name of the specific card it represents. It was received as a practical solution to the logistical friction often associated with mechanics involving double-faced cards, becoming a staple tool for deck builders during the Strixhaven release.
