Where it came from
The Double-Faced Substitute Card, specifically collector number 7 from the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt set, was introduced by Wizards of the Coast to address the logistical challenges of using double-faced cards in competitive Magic: The Gathering play. Because double-faced cards are printed with information on both sides, they cannot be played in opaque sleeves without a visual indicator. These cards were designed to be used as checklists, allowing players to mark which specific card they are representing while keeping their deck uniform.
The design of these cards focuses on utility and clarity, featuring a minimalist template that clearly delineates the card's name and back-side information. While not illustrated with the intricate fantasy art common to the main set, the design reflects a functional aesthetic intended to blend seamlessly into a deck of sleeved cards. They were received primarily as a necessary player aid, valued more for their contribution to gameplay integrity than for their aesthetic or collectible rarity.
