Double-Faced Substitute Card

The Double-Faced Substitute Card was introduced by Wizards of the Coast as a utility tool for the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Kaldheim, released in early 2021. Because many of the set's cards were designed with double-faced mechanics, players required a way to represent these cards in their decks without marking their sleeves or revealing information through deck thickness. These cards were distributed within booster packs as a functional, non-playable stand-in that allowed players to mark which card they were using, ensuring randomized shuffling and fair gameplay.

The design of the card is minimalist and utilitarian, prioritizing clear spaces for players to write the name of the corresponding double-faced card. The aesthetic was developed by the internal Magic: The Gathering art and design team to match the Norse-inspired, icy visual language of the Kaldheim set. While it does not feature the intricate fantasy illustrations found on typical cards, its clean layout and standardized back ensure that it serves its purpose as a reliable, unobtrusive component of a player's deck.
