Double-Faced Substitute Card

The Double-Faced Substitute Card was introduced as a functional utility within the Magic: The Gathering trading card game to address the logistical challenges of using double-faced cards in a deck. As these cards feature unique card backs that differ from standard deck backs, they cannot be played openly without compromising the integrity of a shuffled deck. Wizards of the Coast developed the substitute card as a blank checklist, allowing players to mark which specific double-faced card it represents while keeping the game state fair and concealed.

This specific iteration, originating from The Lost Caverns of Ixalan set, follows the established aesthetic of Wizards of the Coast’s checklist cards. Designed by their internal art and design teams, the focus is entirely on utility and clarity rather than ornate illustration. It is a mass-produced item intended to be functional ephemera, serving as a placeholder for complex mechanics like transform or craft, which define the high-fantasy subterranean setting of Ixalan.
