Double-Faced Substitute Card

The Double-Faced Substitute Card was introduced by Wizards of the Coast for the Kaldheim expansion, released in early 2021. These cards were designed to address the mechanical necessity of representing double-faced cards in a deck without needing to remove the actual card from a protective sleeve. As the game increasingly utilized mechanics where cards have two distinct playable sides, these placeholders were created as a practical utility to preserve the integrity and condition of players' collections during gameplay.

The design of these cards follows a standardized template used across recent Magic: The Gathering sets, prioritizing functional clarity and ease of identification. While the artwork and frame are intentionally understated to distinguish them from playable game cards, they serve as a distinct artifact of the modern era of the game. They were distributed randomly within booster packs, providing a consistent solution for players who frequently utilize double-faced cards in their constructed decks.
