Double-Faced Substitute Card

The Double-Faced Substitute Card, specifically collector number 5 from the Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2022. These cards were designed to serve as functional placeholders for double-faced cards in a player's library or sideboard, effectively replacing cards that could not be easily marked or sleeved due to their unique dual-sided nature. They were included as a utility component within set boosters, intended to maintain the integrity of a shuffle while allowing players to use the actual game pieces separately.

The aesthetic of these substitute cards mirrors the high-tech, cyberpunk-inspired visual identity of the Neon Dynasty expansion. The design team sought to create a minimalist, readable interface that clearly signaled its purpose to an opponent during gameplay. While these cards are purely functional and lack the illustrative depth of the game's core art cards, they are valued by collectors and players for their inclusion in the specific historical context of the set's complex double-faced card mechanics.
