Where it came from
The Double-Faced Substitute Card was introduced by Wizards of the Coast to address the logistical challenges of using double-faced cards in Magic: The Gathering. Since these cards feature unique information on both sides, they cannot be played in opaque sleeves without the risk of marked cards. This substitute card serves as a checklist, allowing players to mark which specific double-faced card it represents while keeping the game state randomized and fair.
The design of this specific card from the Kaldheim set reflects the brutal, Norse-inspired aesthetic of the plane. It features the set's iconic visual motifs and streamlined utility-focused layout, designed by the internal Wizards of the Coast art and graphic design teams. It was received as a functional necessity within the community, prized by players for its role in enabling the use of high-value rare and mythic double-faced cards during competitive play.
