Provenance

Where it came from

The Double-Faced Substitute Card was introduced by Wizards of the Coast for the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion in 2021 as a functional utility piece. These cards were created to facilitate gameplay for Magic: The Gathering players using double-faced cards in opaque-sleeved decks, providing a way to represent the card in hidden zones without revealing its identity or needing to remove it from protective sleeves to flip it.

The design follows the minimalist aesthetic established for all Magic: The Gathering substitute cards, utilizing a standard card back with a simplified front face that allows for the player to write the name of the corresponding double-faced card. While the artwork is largely functional and utilitarian, it reflects the ongoing refinement of the game's accessory ecosystem intended to improve the tactile experience of playing with complex card mechanics.
