Where it came from
The Mountain card, designated collector number 2418, was released as part of the Secret Lair series by Wizards of the Coast. This specific card debuted in the 'Showcase: Strixhaven' drop, which sought to highlight the distinct artistic identities of the five colleges within the Strixhaven University setting. The series focused on visually striking, alternative-art frames that departed from the traditional aesthetic of the core Magic: The Gathering card sets.
The illustration was crafted by artist Magali Villeneuve, who is well-regarded for her ethereal and detailed fantasy work within the game. Her design aimed to capture the essence of the environment through a blend of traditional fantasy motifs and the unique, scholarly aesthetic associated with the Strixhaven plane. Upon release, the drop was received by collectors as a premium, artistic alternative for deck building, serving more as a display-oriented piece than a functional necessity for gameplay.
