Where it came from
The Mountain card, collector number 275, was released as part of the 2022 Magic: The Gathering expansion, The Brothers' War. This set serves as a narrative retelling of the iconic conflict between the brothers Urza and Mishra, a foundational storyline in the game's lore. The card design leans into the industrial, artifact-heavy aesthetic of the set, featuring a stark, evocative landscape that reflects the desolation wrought by the titanic war between the siblings.
The illustration was crafted by artist Johannes Voss, who is well-regarded for his atmospheric and emotionally resonant style. In designing this piece, Voss sought to capture the blend of ancient geography and the encroaching mechanical devastation central to the set's theme. Upon its release, the card was received positively by the community, with many players praising the balance of classic Magic landscape imagery with the distinct, metallic visual language of The Brothers' War.
