Where it came from
The Mountain card from the Secret Lair Drop series, identified by collector number 1655, was released as part of a specialized, limited-availability collection by Wizards of the Coast. These drops were introduced as a way to feature high-concept, stylized art that departs from the traditional aesthetic of the core Magic: The Gathering trading card game, targeting collectors who appreciate contemporary illustration and unique thematic framing.
The artistic direction of this particular card reflects a shift toward bespoke, artist-driven visuals intended to serve as both functional game pieces and standalone art objects. By commissioning distinct artistic signatures for the basic lands in these sets, Wizards of the Coast aimed to offer players a more personalized way to express their aesthetic preferences during gameplay, moving away from the uniform look of standard-issue land cards.
