Where it came from
The Mountain card, designated collector number 1942, was released as part of the Secret Lair Drop Series, a specialized line of Magic: The Gathering cards introduced by Wizards of the Coast in late 2019. These drops are curated, limited-time collections that often feature unique artistic themes and guest illustrators, moving away from the standard aesthetic established in main-set booster packs. This particular iteration was created to offer players premium, visually distinct versions of foundational resources.
The design of this specific card features artwork by the artist Seb McKinnon, who is known for a surrealist, moody aesthetic that deviates from traditional high-fantasy tropes. McKinnon’s design goal for the Secret Lair cards was to evoke a more atmospheric and grounded sense of place, using an earthy, painterly style that emphasizes the raw, tectonic essence of the Mountain. Upon release, the card was received with notable praise by the community for its artistic departure from the more vibrant, standard card illustrations, becoming a sought-after piece for players who favor a more somber or ethereal visual identity for their decks.
