Mountain

The 1998 World Championship Decks were released by Wizards of the Coast as a way for players to experience the high-level tournament play that defined the competitive Magic: The Gathering circuit. These boxed sets contained exact replicas of the decks used by the top players at the 1998 World Championships, complete with gold-bordered cards and distinct backs that made them ineligible for standard tournament play, ensuring they remained unique historical artifacts rather than game-legal cards.

The Mountain card included in this set features the classic artwork by Rebecca Guay, originally commissioned for the Tempest expansion. Guay's distinct, painterly style brought a more ethereal and textured quality to the basic land cards of the era, which stood out against the more literal interpretations found in earlier sets. By the time this card was included in the 1998 Championship decks, it was already well-regarded by collectors for its aesthetic departure from the traditional, rigid landscape illustrations common to the game at the time.
