Where it came from
The Mountain card from the Magic 2012 core set was released in July 2011 as part of the sixteenth core set for Magic: The Gathering. As a basic land, it is an essential component required for gameplay, intended to provide the red mana necessary to cast spells. The design language for this specific card aligns with the set's aesthetic transition toward more modern, streamlined card frames and updated artwork standards that defined the early 2010s era of the game.
The illustration was created by the artist Jung Park, who contributed several pieces to the Magic 2012 set. Park sought to capture the jagged, formidable scale of a mountain range, utilizing a high-contrast palette of deep crimsons and dark greys to evoke the elemental nature of the color red. Upon release, the artwork was well-received by players for its atmospheric depth and clean composition, fitting seamlessly into the standard pool of basic lands available during that tournament season.
