Where it came from
The Mountain card from the Unlimited Edition of Magic: The Gathering was released in 1993 as part of the game's second print run. Following the rapid sell-out of the limited Alpha and Beta sets, Wizards of the Coast produced Unlimited to meet overwhelming player demand. While these cards maintained the artistic aesthetic of the original sets, they are distinguished by a stark white border, intended to make the game's various printings easily identifiable to players and collectors.
The landscape illustration featured on this specific card was part of the original art cycle commissioned by Richard Garfield and his team to establish the visual language of the game's five core mana types. These illustrations were designed to be evocative and minimalist, providing a functional, atmospheric backdrop for the game's mechanics. The art served its purpose well, helping to solidify the identity of the Mountain as a fundamental element of the Magic experience and establishing a visual style that has remained iconic within the hobby for decades.
