Provenance

Where it came from

The Mountain card from the Magic 2013 (M13) core set was released in July 2012 as part of the foundational base set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Like all basic lands in the core sets, it was designed to function as an essential resource for players building decks, providing the red mana necessary for casting fire-themed spells and creatures. The set was intended to serve as an accessible entry point for new players while providing reprints and new art for long-time enthusiasts.

The illustration for this specific card, numbered 242, was created by the artist Jung Park. Tasked with capturing the stark and rugged essence of a mountainous landscape, Park employed a painterly, atmospheric style that emphasizes deep shadows and sharp, volcanic silhouettes. Within the context of the Magic 2013 set, this artwork was well-received for its sense of scale and its departure from the more traditional, craggy depictions of mountains seen in previous core sets.
