Mountain

Released in 1998 as part of the Urza's Saga expansion, this card represents the iconic Mountain basic land. As the first set in the ambitious Urza block, Urza's Saga marked a significant shift in Magic: The Gathering history, introducing complex mechanics and a deep, multi-year narrative arc centered on the artificer Urza. The aesthetic of the set was designed to reflect the sprawling scope of Dominaria’s history, moving away from the more generic fantasy tropes of earlier sets toward a more cohesive, high-fantasy industrial look.

The artwork for this specific Mountain was created by artist Rob Alexander, who became legendary for his contributions to the game's landscape illustrations. Alexander’s approach focused on capturing the atmospheric interplay of light and texture, aiming to provide players with a sense of place rather than just a mechanical utility. Upon release, the set was noted for its distinct visual style, and Alexander’s landscapes helped define the grounded, painterly aesthetic that characterized the late 90s era of the game, cementing this series of basic lands as favorites among longtime collectors.
