Provenance

Where it came from

The Mountain card from the Unlimited Edition of Magic: The Gathering was released in 1993 as part of the game's second print run. Following the rapid sell-out of the Limited Edition Alpha and Beta sets, Wizards of the Coast produced Unlimited to meet overwhelming player demand. While it shared the same card list and artwork as its predecessors, the set introduced a white-bordered design to distinguish these cards from the earlier, more scarce printings, making it a foundational piece for early players and collectors.

The artwork for this specific Mountain was illustrated by Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic artists in the early history of the game. Rush utilized a stark, elemental style to depict the rugged terrain, emphasizing the raw, imposing nature of the land. His contributions were essential to establishing the visual identity of Magic, and his work on the basic lands remains highly regarded for its clarity and atmosphere, which resonated deeply with the aesthetic sensibilities of the era's fantasy gaming community.
