Where it came from
The Mountain card from the Shards of Alara set was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2008 as part of the core expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set introduced the plane of Alara, a world shattered into five distinct shards, each defined by a lack of two colors of mana. The Mountain represents the Red mana source of Jund, a savage, volcanic landscape teeming with primordial life and dominated by draconic predators.
The artwork for this specific card was commissioned by artist John Avon, a veteran contributor to the game known for his sweeping, atmospheric landscapes. Avon’s approach for this iteration focused on the harsh, jagged peaks and geothermal activity characteristic of the Jund shard, utilizing a palette of deep oranges and charcoals to evoke a sense of heat and volatility. It was well-received by players for its technical quality and its ability to visually ground the thematic identity of the set.
