Where it came from
This Island card was released in 2008 as part of the Shards of Alara set, a pivotal expansion in the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. The set was designed to explore the concept of a fractured world where each plane, or 'shard,' lacked two colors of mana, resulting in distinct visual and mechanical identities. This particular landscape art reflects the lush, untamed aesthetic of Bant, one of the five shards characterized by its focus on honor and verdant nature.
The artwork was illustrated by Chuck Lukacs, who sought to capture the serene, expansive vistas associated with the Bant shard. The design emphasizes a balanced, tranquil horizon intended to evoke a sense of structural peace before the later narrative convergence of the planes. Upon release, it was well-received by players for its atmospheric quality, becoming a staple land choice for those looking to build decks thematic to the Alara block.
