Mountain

The Mountain card from the Commander 2013 set, collector number 351, is a basic land card released as part of the initial wave of standalone Commander-themed decks by Wizards of the Coast. These decks were designed to provide accessible entry points for the Commander format, which had grown from a grassroots fan invention into one of the most popular ways to play Magic: The Gathering. As a basic land, this version was intended to provide functional utility while maintaining the cohesive aesthetic themes established for the 2013 preconstructed decks.

The illustration for this Mountain, executed by artist Richard Wright, leans into the dramatic, craggy landscapes often associated with red-aligned mana in the game's lore. Wright, a frequent contributor to Magic sets during this era, sought to capture a sense of verticality and harsh, volcanic atmosphere consistent with the high-fantasy world-building of the game. Upon its release, the card was received as a standard, utilitarian piece of the Commander 2013 product line, valued primarily for its thematic integration into the accompanying deck lists.
