Mountain

The Mountain card from the Return to Ravnica set was released in 2012 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion that marked a return to the fan-favorite cityscape plane of Ravnica. Unlike traditional fantasy settings, Ravnica is an urban world entirely covered by a sprawling metropolis, challenging artists to reimagine foundational land types. This specific iteration was designed to reflect the industrial, dense, and architectural nature of the plane, moving away from natural peaks and toward the imposing, man-made structures that define the setting's aesthetic.

The illustration was crafted by artist Adam Paquette, who aimed to evoke the verticality and imposing scale of the tenth district. By emphasizing the cold, shadowed masonry and the jagged silhouettes of the city's towering spires, Paquette successfully communicated a sense of place that felt distinct from other iterations of the Mountain card. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players and collectors alike for its ability to maintain the functional identity of a basic land while seamlessly integrating into the broader visual language of the Ravnica plane.
