Where it came from
The Mountain card from the Rivals Quick Start Set was released in 1996 by Wizards of the Coast as part of their effort to make the Magic: The Gathering trading card game more accessible to new players. Unlike the primary expansion sets, this product was designed as a self-contained learning tool, intended to simplify the complex rules of the game while providing a curated selection of core lands and spells to jumpstart a collection.
The design of this specific Mountain follows the aesthetic conventions established in the early days of Magic, featuring a stark, evocative landscape intended to represent the resource of red mana. While the artist for this specific iteration is not always individually credited in the same manner as premiere set illustrators, the artwork adheres to the classic fantasy tradition that defined the game's initial visual identity, focusing on clarity and utility for players just learning to navigate the game's mechanics.
