Mountain

This Mountain card was released in 2005 as part of the Ravnica: City of Guilds set, the first installment in a trilogy focused on the sprawling, urban cityscape of Ravnica. Unlike traditional fantasy settings that emphasize natural wilderness, this iteration of the basic land was designed to reflect the aesthetic of a plane dominated entirely by architecture and infrastructure, emphasizing the industrial and dense nature of the setting.

The illustration was created by artist Stephan Martiniere, who sought to capture the towering, layered skyscrapers that characterize the plane. His design leans into the thematic integration of geology and urban development, presenting the Mountain not as a rural peak, but as an integral part of the world's sprawling, multi-tiered foundation. Upon its release, it became a notable example of how the game's art direction adapted core mechanics to fit a distinct world-building identity.
