Where it came from
Released in October 2005 as part of the Ravnica: City of Guilds expansion for Magic: The Gathering, this Island card represents a departure from the traditional natural landscapes typical of the game. Designed to reflect the dense, urban sprawl of the world-spanning city of Ravnica, it emphasizes the verticality and architectural saturation of a world where nature has been almost entirely paved over.
The artwork was commissioned from artist Stephan Martiniere, who sought to capture the surreal, multi-layered cityscape characteristic of the plane. By focusing on deep canyons of stone and artificial light rather than water or organic flora, the design served to immerse players in the unique setting of the Ravnica block. It was well-received for its evocative environmental storytelling and remains a staple for players looking to theme their decks around the city's distinct aesthetic.
