Where it came from
The Bird token, numbered 2 in the Tarkir Dragonstorm set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2014 as part of the Khans of Tarkir block. These tokens were designed to function as game pieces for cards like Wingmate Roc, which require players to represent additional creatures on the battlefield. The token's aesthetic mirrors the high-fantasy, war-torn landscape of the Tarkir plane, emphasizing the fierce, avian nature of the creatures inhabiting the region.
The visual design of the token reflects the set's broader art direction, which utilized a combination of digital illustration and traditional techniques to convey the rugged, nomadic lifestyle of the various clans. While individual artists are credited for the various tokens within the block, the series as a whole was received by the Magic: The Gathering community as a functional and cohesive extension of the set's flavorful world-building, helping to maintain visual immersion during gameplay.
