Where it came from
This Mountain card was released as part of the Return to Ravnica set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, debuting in late 2012. It serves as one of the fundamental basic land cards used to generate red mana within the complex, city-wide plane of Ravnica. The set was designed to revisit a fan-favorite setting, focusing on the ten diverse guilds that govern the urban landscape, and this particular land was crafted to evoke the architectural and industrial aesthetic inherent to the plane's aesthetic evolution.
The artwork for this piece was illustrated by Richard Wright, a veteran artist for the game known for his atmospheric contributions to the fantasy genre. In designing this card, Wright leaned into the verticality and dense urban sprawl characteristic of Ravnica, moving away from naturalistic mountain vistas to emphasize the constructed, labyrinthine geography of the city. The card was well-received by players for its ability to maintain immersion in the setting’s unique environment while remaining functional within the game's broader mechanical landscape.
