Plains

The Plains card, numbered 292, is a fundamental component of the Marvel: Darkhold Destiny collectible card game. Released to coincide with the mid-90s surge in popularity for non-sports trading cards, the set sought to integrate the vast, often occult-leaning lore of the Marvel Universe with traditional deck-building mechanics. The design language of this set leans heavily into the dark, moody aesthetics of 1990s comic book art, utilizing atmospheric illustrations intended to evoke the mysterious and often supernatural themes associated with the Darkhold mythos.

The artistry within this set reflects the stylistic trends of the era, prioritizing high-contrast imagery and dramatic compositions to distinguish the cards from more whimsical gaming alternatives. While individual artists for basic land-type cards in such sets were often part of a larger studio commission, the design goal was to provide a consistent visual backdrop for the more character-driven cards in the game. Upon its release, the set was received as an ambitious attempt to capture the interest of both comic book collectors and emerging trading card game enthusiasts, though it remains a niche entry in the history of Marvel-themed gaming.
