Provenance

Where it came from

The Plains card, numbered 272, originates from the 2024 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Outlaws of Thunder Junction. This set marked a significant tonal departure for the game, featuring a western-themed plane where legendary villains and outlaws converge. The art direction emphasizes a rugged, frontier aesthetic, designed to evoke the classic tropes of cowboy cinema while maintaining the high-fantasy hallmarks of the Magic multiverse.

This particular basic land card was illustrated by the artist Dominik Mayer. Known for his distinctively angular, stylized approach to light and shadow, Mayer aimed to capture the stark, expansive beauty of a western landscape at twilight. The card was widely noted by the player community for its bold composition and the cohesive, painterly look that set the tone for the set’s broader art package.
