Where it came from
The Plains card, numbered 272, originated from the 2024 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Murders at Karlov Manor. The set draws heavy inspiration from classic detective fiction and noir aesthetics, shifting the iconic setting of Ravnica into a gloomy, urban investigation landscape. This specific basic land was crafted to evoke the atmospheric gloom of the plane, utilizing a visual language that emphasizes architectural density and the moody, rain-slicked lighting central to the set's central mystery theme.
The art was created by illustrator Alayna Danner, who has been a frequent contributor to Magic: The Gathering. Her design for this Plains focuses on the stark, imposing geometry of the city of Ravnica, moving away from the traditional open landscapes typically seen on basic Plains cards. The piece was well-received by players for its departure from standard topographical tropes, fitting seamlessly into the set's overarching aesthetic of an industrial, sprawling metropolis where even the open spaces feel dominated by the reach of the city.
