Where it came from
The Plains card numbered 2509 originates from the 'Secret Lair x MSCHF' drop, released by Wizards of the Coast in collaboration with the art collective MSCHF in 2022. This specific set was designed to subvert the standard visual language of Magic: The Gathering, featuring cards that intentionally parody the game's mechanics and aesthetic conventions. The Plains card itself reflects this disruptive philosophy, utilizing a stark, unconventional layout that challenges the traditional iconography typically expected in a land card.
The collaboration was rooted in MSCHF's history of creating satirical products that critique consumer culture and corporate branding. By integrating their provocative design sensibilities into the established card game, the creators aimed to spark conversation about the nature of collectibility and the absurdity of high-value secondary markets. While the set received mixed reactions from traditionalists who found the unconventional frames difficult to read, it was widely praised by collectors who prioritize artistic experimentation and meta-commentary within the gaming community.
