Where it came from
The Plains card numbered 542 is part of the Secret Lair series, a curated line of Magic: The Gathering cards featuring unique, high-concept artistic treatments released directly by Wizards of the Coast. This specific card was featured in the 'Special Guest: Yoji Shinkawa' drop, released in 2020. The collection sought to bridge the gap between traditional trading card aesthetics and the distinct visual language of contemporary video game concept art.
The card features the work of Yoji Shinkawa, the renowned artist and character designer best known for his influential contributions to the Metal Gear series. Shinkawa utilized his signature minimalist ink-wash style, characterized by bold, expressive strokes and a muted color palette, to reinterpret the classic concept of a plains landscape. Upon its release, the set was widely praised by the gaming and collecting communities for its departure from traditional fantasy illustration styles in favor of a stark, avant-garde aesthetic.
