Plains

The Plains card, numbered 99 in the Jumpstart 2022 set, represents a specialized inclusion in a product line designed to facilitate quick, randomized play. Released by Wizards of the Coast in late 2022, Jumpstart 2022 was engineered to provide a bridge for new players and a dynamic experience for veterans, utilizing themed decks that could be shuffled together instantly. This specific Plains card is notable for its inclusion of anime-inspired aesthetic choices, a stylistic direction the company explored to broaden the visual appeal of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game.

The artwork for this card was illustrated by Akina Ibuki, who contributed to the set's effort to integrate distinct artistic sensibilities into the classic fantasy framework of the game. The design emphasizes clean, vibrant lines and thematic motifs that deviate from the more traditional, painterly landscapes often found in core sets. Upon release, these anime-style basic lands were generally well-received by the player base, specifically within the collecting community, where players sought them out as premium, aesthetically focused additions to their decks.
