Provenance

Where it came from

The Plains card, numbered 101, originated as part of the Secret Lair Drop Series, a specialized line of limited-run, direct-to-consumer releases by Wizards of the Coast. These drops were introduced to provide stylized, often artist-driven alternatives to standard Magic: The Gathering cards, shifting away from the traditional set-based distribution model to create highly collectable, premium versions of foundational gameplay elements.

This specific iteration focuses on distinct aesthetic experimentation, moving beyond the typical high-fantasy landscape tropes found in the base game. By collaborating with a diverse range of illustrators, the design team aimed to elevate the basic land cards into pieces of standalone art. The release was received as a significant shift in how secondary, non-mechanical card variations are valued by the community, emphasizing artistic prestige and visual identity over utility.
