Where it came from
Reliquary Tower first appeared in the Conflux expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 2009. Designed by the Wizards of the Coast development team, the card was created to provide a unique utility effect that allows players to hold an unlimited number of cards in their hand. Its design space addresses the tension between card draw advantages and the standard rules of hand size, quickly becoming a staple in casual formats like Commander where deck synergies often rely on drawing large quantities of cards.
The version appearing in 'The List'—a rotating collection of reprints found in Set Boosters—features the iconic artwork originally commissioned for the card's debut. The illustration emphasizes the architectural grandeur of a mystical archive, grounding the mechanical function of the card in a sense of vast, infinite knowledge. Over time, the card has been reprinted across various supplemental products, cementing its status as an essential utility card for players who prioritize card advantage and hand management.
