Where it came from
Reliquary Tower was originally introduced to the Magic: The Gathering card game in the 2008 set Eventide. Its design addresses a specific mechanical challenge for players who draw large numbers of cards, removing the traditional seven-card maximum hand size to reward strategies focused on card advantage. The card became a staple of the Commander format, leading to its inclusion as a reprint in the Commander 2015 product line, which was designed to expand the playability of the format through preconstructed decks.
The artwork for this specific version, illustrated by Karl Kopinski, captures the towering, mystical aesthetic associated with the card's theme. Kopinski’s style emphasizes the imposing scale of the structure, grounding the magical utility of the card in a sense of place. Upon its release and subsequent reprints, the card was well received by the community for its utility, remaining a sought-after tool for decks that revolve around drawing through large portions of the library.
