Where it came from
Reliquary Tower originated in the 2008 set Eventide, quickly becoming a staple in the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem due to its simple, utility-focused ability to remove the maximum hand size limit. This specific iteration, collector number 348, was featured in the 2023 release The Lost Caverns of Ixalan Commander decks. It was designed to support the set's themes of subterranean exploration and resource management, offering players a way to maintain large hands during the extended play sessions typical of the Commander format.
The artwork for this particular version was rendered by illustrator Alayna Danner, who has a long-standing relationship with Wizards of the Coast. Her design aesthetic for this card leans into the lush, mysterious, and cavernous environment of Ixalan, utilizing bioluminescent flora and crystalline structures to evoke a sense of ancient, hidden power. Upon release, this reprint was well received by the player community for providing an accessible, thematic version of a utility land that remains essential for decks focused on card draw and value engine mechanics.
