Where it came from
Reliquary Tower was originally introduced in the 2011 set Commander, designed to address a common mechanical friction in the Magic: The Gathering format by allowing players to retain their full hand size regardless of how many cards they drew. This specific version was released in 2022 as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander collaboration, a landmark set that integrated the aesthetic and lore of Games Workshop’s universe into the card game’s mechanics.
The art for this iteration was created by artist Games Workshop, designed to evoke the grimdark atmosphere of the Imperium of Man. By featuring the iconic architecture associated with the Adeptus Mechanicus and the lore of preserved knowledge, the design aligns with the card's function of hoarding resources. The card was received positively by players for both its utility in deck-building and its thematic fit within the crossover, becoming a staple functional reprint for Commander enthusiasts.
