Where it came from
Reliquary Tower first appeared in the Conflux set in 2009, designed to provide a utility land that removes the maximum hand size constraint for players. Within the Commander format, which emphasizes long-term resource management and drawing large quantities of cards, the tower became an essential staple for diverse deck archetypes. The Commander 2020 version features updated card frame styling consistent with the set's release, maintaining the functional utility that has made the card a fixture in the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem for over a decade.
The card's design serves as a foundational piece of utility for casual and competitive Commander players alike. By allowing a player to hold any number of cards, it facilitates powerful late-game strategies and rewards players for card-draw engine construction. The artwork for the Commander 2020 iteration maintains the visual language of previous printings, emphasizing the arcane, scholarly aesthetic associated with the item's lore-based ability to store vast amounts of magical knowledge.
