Where it came from
Reliquary Tower first appeared in the Coldsnap expansion in 2006, designed as a utility land that allowed players to hold an unlimited number of cards in their hand. The design intent was to provide a strategic reward for card-draw-heavy archetypes, effectively removing the traditional seven-card hand size limit that usually acts as a balance mechanic in the game.
The Magic 2013 printing, featuring artwork by Lars Grant-West, brought this utility land into the core set environment. Grant-West's illustration depicts the tower as a monolithic, mystical structure, aligning with the visual identity of the set's high-fantasy aesthetic. It has since become a staple inclusion in Commander format decks, where its ability to maintain board advantage through high-volume card drawing remains highly valued by players.
