Where it came from
Reliquary Tower originated in the 2008 set Eventide, designed to provide a utility land that removes the maximum hand size restriction for players. Its creation addressed a common friction point in casual Commander and high-draw strategy decks, allowing players to hoard cards without discarding at the end of their turns. The card has since become a staple of the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem, appearing in numerous reprints and specialized products due to its enduring popularity and functional simplicity.
The inclusion of Reliquary Tower in Mystery Booster 2 serves as a nod to the card's status as a quintessential utility piece. The aesthetic of the card—a monolithic, stark structure reaching into the clouds—was crafted to evoke a sense of immense, singular focus. It is widely regarded by the community as a foundational design, praised for its straightforward utility that subtly shifts the momentum of a game by rewarding resource accumulation rather than penalizing it.
