Where it came from
The Plains card, numbered 252 in the Magic 2015 core set released in 2014, serves as a fundamental resource card within the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Like all basic lands in this set, it was designed to provide the white mana necessary for gameplay, functioning as the foundational building block for decks utilizing white spells. The aesthetic of the Magic 2015 core set was intended to evoke a high-fantasy sensibility, often featuring expansive, painterly landscapes that emphasize the tranquil and structured nature of the Plains environment.
The illustration for this specific card was crafted by artist Jonas De Ro, who has contributed extensively to the visual identity of Magic: The Gathering. De Ro focused on creating a sense of scale and serenity, utilizing soft lighting and sweeping vistas to ground the card within the game’s broader atmospheric world-building. Upon its release, the card was widely distributed as part of the core set's land cycle, receiving positive recognition from players for its clean, evocative depiction of classic fantasy terrain.
