Where it came from
The Plains card, collector number 289, was released in 2004 as part of the Champions of Kamigawa expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked a significant stylistic departure for the game, drawing heavy inspiration from Japanese folklore, history, and Shinto mythology. The creative team aimed to build a cohesive, immersive world that felt distinct from the traditional high-fantasy settings that had dominated the game's first decade, moving toward a more atmospheric and ethereal aesthetic.
The artwork for this specific basic land was illustrated by John Avon, a prominent figure in the game's visual history known for his mastery of landscapes. His approach to the Kamigawa Plains involved creating a serene, painterly representation of the plane's unique geography, emphasizing sweeping vistas and a sense of calm. The illustration was well-received by the player base for its ability to convey the tranquil, meditative nature of the setting, and it remains a frequently cited example of the artistic quality introduced during the Kamigawa block.
