Where it came from
Released in 1997, the Portal set was designed by Wizards of the Coast as an entry point for new Magic: The Gathering players. The collection utilized simplified rules and a distinct visual language to reduce the barrier to entry for those unfamiliar with the complex mechanics of the base game. This specific Plains card, numbered 198, features artwork that aligns with the set's mandate for accessible, clear imagery intended to orient players within the game's fantasy environment.
The art for this Plains was created by Dameon Willich, who contributed extensively to the visual identity of Magic: The Gathering during the mid-to-late 1990s. Willich focused on capturing a serene, panoramic landscape that emphasizes the quintessential essence of the Plains card type. Upon its release, the Portal set received praise for its pedagogical utility, though seasoned collectors often noted its departure from the more intricate stylistic norms established by earlier expansions.
