Provenance

Where it came from

The Plains card, numbered 232 in the Scars of Mirrodin expansion released in 2010, represents the return to the metallic plane of Mirrodin after the original 2003 block. This set was designed to explore the corruption of the artificial world by the Phyrexians, a recurring antagonistic force in the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. The aesthetic shift from the clean, pristine chrome of the original set to the scarred, decaying landscape of this expansion serves as the central visual theme for the basic lands.

The illustration for this specific card was created by artist Jung Park. Tasked with depicting a landscape transformed by the invasion of Phyrexian oil, Park utilized a stark, industrial color palette to evoke a sense of environmental dread. The design choices prioritize the integration of organic landscape features with encroaching mechanical structures, a hallmark of the set's art direction that was widely praised by players for its atmospheric departure from traditional high-fantasy environments.
