Plains

Released in 1999, the Plains card from the Portal Three Kingdoms set occupies a unique niche in the history of Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed specifically for the Asian market, drawing heavy thematic inspiration from the historical Chinese epic, Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Unlike standard expansions of the era, the cards were engineered to be accessible for introductory play, featuring simplified rules text and mechanics that diverged from the complex standard format of the time.

The aesthetic of this basic land reflects the set's distinct cultural focus, utilizing traditional artistic styles to represent the rolling landscapes of ancient China. While the set was initially met with limited distribution outside of its primary target regions, it later gained significant status among global collectors due to its relatively short print run and the evocative, culturally specific illustrations that set it apart from the more traditional high-fantasy tropes of the game's core sets.
