Provenance

Where it came from

The Plains card from the Limited Edition Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering was released in 1993 as one of the fundamental basic land cards required for gameplay. Designed by Wizards of the Coast to facilitate the game's mana system, this set served as the inaugural print run that introduced Richard Garfield’s trading card game to the public. The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, who was instrumental in defining the aesthetic identity of the early game.

Rush’s design for this specific Plains card captures a minimalist, serene landscape that emphasizes the utilitarian nature of the card while maintaining the artistic flair of the early 90s fantasy aesthetic. Because it was part of the very first printing of the game, which was limited in distribution, it has become a cornerstone for collectors. The design is celebrated today for its nostalgic value and the simplicity that characterized the game's formative period.
